Institute of Theoretical Physics (ITP) of Shanxi University, founded in 1989 with the permission of the Shanxi Provincial Education Commission, one of the members of the State Key Laboratory of Quantum Optics and Quantum Optics Devices, is a professional institute focusing its research emphasis on the fundamental research of theoretical physics. The institute now has 24 research members, among them 10 professors, and 9 associate professors.

Its research fields include: (1) Quantum theory and its applications, (2) Quantum transport of mesoscopic systems, (3) Dynamics of complex systems, (4) Ultracold atomic gas and Bose-Einstein condensation, (5) Computational Material and phase transition in extreme conditions, (6) Moderate and high energy nuclear physics and electron-positron collision.

We recruit Ph.D. and master candidates in the major fields of theoretical physics, condensed matter physics, and particle physics and nuclear physics. Currently, there are 180 graduate students in the institute. Until now we have won over 10 Shanxi Province Science and Technology Prizes. We encourage original theoretical research in physics with an attitude of equality, generosity, freedom, and harmony, which constitute the institute's motto. The institute will coordinate basic research on theoretical physics and facilitate interaction between theory and experiments in fields such as cold atom physics,  condensed matter material, etc.
